DNA Markers for Quality Traits of Aromatic Rice Suitable for West Bengal for Rice:

We have identified around 100 rice lines, including Basmatis, which maintain aroma in West Bengal; DNA fingerprinting of 65 of these cultivars has been completed. Crossing and F2 segregation analysis show a single recessive gene controls the expression of aroma. A permanent mapping population of 700 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) has been developed from the non-aromatic/aromatic cross combination IR-72/Pusa Basmati-1. Using phenotyped F5 individuals of this cross, four SSLP (simple sequence length polymorphism) markers were identified to be linked with aroma on chromosome 8. The next target to map is cooked kernel elongation.

Rice Landraces of West Bengal:

We have collected around 250 rice landraces from different districts of West Bengal and have characterized the agro-morphology of 100 of the lines using 65 traits (Standard Evaluation System, IRRI). Our collection includes the "dual-seeded" landraces Jugal and Dui-Satin. Preliminary observations indicate that in Jugal, the gynoecium is reiterated 5 to 6 times before fertilization and consequent filling in of the endosperm.
