Present research activities

1. The ddNTP- sensitive DNA Pol beta type enzyme from plant system has been purified

and functional analysis  has been done on the enzyme  from Rice and Vigna Mungo. It’s role in endoduplication has been established.

2. Salinity Stress in Rice: - ABA inducible transcription factor was found to be very low in high yielding but salt sensitive rice cultivars but very high level of ABA inducible factor was detected from the lamina and roots of salt tolerant rice cultivars.. Antibody against OSBz8 was made and the protein OSBz8 was detected  poorly in salt sensitive and huge amount in salt tolerant (Nonabokra, Pokkali) rice cultivars. Rab16a gene expression has been studied also. The gene for Rab16a has been overexpressed  in tobacco and the transgenics (at T1 ans T2 generation) were found to tolerate even 300mM NaCl. Similarly Samdecarboxylase (SAMdC) cDNA was overexpressed in transgenic tobacco and the plants were found to tolerate salinity stress.

3.                  Fruit ripening of Tomato has been studied by analyzing the expression of Le-MADS-RIN gene. The target genes for this transcription factor has been identified and  Light inducible cis-acting elements has been identified from the 5’end of it’s gene. Work is going on to find out the gene is light inducible. Fruit ripening in Banana has been studied in detailed by analysis of the fruits from the variety Cavendish, Rasthahi, Kanthali, Poovan and Monthan. The expression of the genes for ACC synthase, ACC oxidase and sucrose-phosphate – synthase has been studied in detailed. In addition fruit ripening in Tomato, Papaya, Water melon, etc, have been compared and the production of lycopene or β-carotene have been studied by monitoring the expression of three important genes like phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase and lycopene-β-cyclase.
