Although membrane annotation is essential for understanding the functions and subtleties of structures of transmembrane (TM) proteins, the explicit position of membranes in TM proteins is absent in the pdb. Using a simple hydrophobic lipid-protein mismatch energy and a flexible lipid/water boundary, we have annotated the position of lipid bilayer for all TM proteins in pdb. One can either access the Membrane Annotated Protein Structure (MAPS) database or interactively analyze membrane-protein orientations of any uploaded pdb structure.
