Staffs of P. M. C. G. Department

Plant Molecular and Cellular Genetics was established in 1989 with an aim to study basic and applied aspects of plant processes through modern molecular approaches. The section presently has one Professor, one Reader and two Senior Lecturers.

The major emphasis in the research in the section are in the following areas : plant cell & tissue culture; genetic manipulation through somatic hybridization and transgenic approach; molecular aspects of tissue differentiation; transgenic approach towards crop improvement for nutritional, as well as biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and molecular evolution through genomic & proteomic approaches. Support for research in the section is obtained from funding agencies like DBT, DST, CSIR, DAE, Rockefeller Foundation and Indo-US collaborations. The section also runs a DBT-funded Centre for Plant Molecular Biology in collaboration with scientists from the Department of Botany.
