150th birth anniversary of Acharya J. C. Bose
International
Symposium (ISoMM-09) January 14-16, 2009 BOSE INSTITUTE, KOLKATA
Bose Institute, as a part of year long programme to commemorate 150th birthday of its founder Sir J. C. Bose, is organizing an International Symposium on Microwaves and Millimeterwaves: Basics and Technology during 14-16, January 2009. Sir J. C. Bose was a scientist par excellence, who, as remarked by Sir Neville Mott, was at least 60 years ahead of his time. Almost 113 years back, Sir Bose for the first time demonstrated the wireless transmission of millimetre wave, first in Calcutta in the year 1895 and subsequently, after two years in England. The wavelengths he used ranged from 2.5 cm to 5 mm. Sir J. C. Bose was the first to use waveguides to send the rays directionally, many decades before the modern waveguide techniques came to be used. He pioneered the modern microwave analogue physics by his work in which he stimulated the d-and-I-rotatory sugar molecules by twisted jute fibers. Acharya Bose also developed the first useful application of a semiconductor material. He demonstrated the use of galena crystals contacted by metal point (Cat’s whisker) to detect millimeter waves. Patent rights for their use in detecting electromagnetic radiation were granted to him in 1904. With the passage of more than a century the work of Sir J. C. Bose on microwaves and millimeter waves has grown infinitely and has found its application in almost every sphere of human life. By about the end of the 19th century, the interests of Bose turned away from electromagnetic waves to response phenomena in plants; this included studies of the effects of electromagnetic radiation on plants, a topical field today. He retired from the Presidency College in 1915, but was appointed Professor Emeritus. J. C. Bose was knighted in 1917 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1920. Bose Institute was founded by J. C. Bose in the year 1917 with the purpose of investigating fully "the many and ever opening problems of the nascent science which includes both life and non-life". On his 59th birthday, on November 30, 1917, he inaugurated the Bose Institute by the side of his Kolkata residence. The Institute has evolved over the years into a multi-disciplinary research organization with stress on fundamental research in its pursuit of advancement of knowledge in Science and Technology and at the same time developing highly competent and able scientific manpower for the country. Bose Institute is one of the few multi-disciplinary institutions in the country that has succeeded in developing a vast intellectual resource in areas ranging from astrophysics, radiation physics and quantum mechanics to the frontline areas of contemporary biology such as bioinformatics & computational biology, structure and functional dynamics of bio-molecules, drug modelling, molecular genetics of microbes and development of transgenic plants etc. Recently, major research initiative has been undertaken by Bose Institute in the area of microwave & millimeter waves through various projects funded by government agencies. Year 2008 being the 150th birth year anniversary of Sir J. C. Bose, Bose Institute has decided to hold this International Symposium. This symposium is dedicated to the entire radio science community who are engaged with various studies including experimental developments in different application areas.
